Well Diva Wellness Wednesdays and More at Well Diva Lifestyle

cover for blog postHey Divas!

If you haven’t noticed there are some changes going on here.  Sooner or later the new website will replace this one, and we will officially be located at welldiva.com.  Why the change?

1. I had the hardest time communicating the message of Soul Food Therapy when I wanted to cover so much more than food.

2.  I want to create a community of women who want to live well, eat well, and just overall be well.  I think the name Well Diva LIfestyle says that.

3.  I love soul food, but I love so many other foods, so maybe the name Soul Food Therapy was just too narrow.

Change is good, and it’s time for a change.  A few exciting things to come:

Well Diva Wednesdays – You’re already signed up here, so you can expect more regular posts about food and healthy eating, but also healthy thinking, spending, and whatever else I can pass along to you.

The Well Diva Guidebook – It’s coming along and I can’t wait to share it with you!  I can’t give too many details, but when you get it be sure to let me know what you think.

The Well Diva podcast – really excited about this collaboration with my cousin Zahra of The Natural Journey for Life.

The Well Diva Inner Circle – I’m actually in the very early planning stages of this so I’ll share more as it develops.

The Well Diva Retreat – That’s down the road but it will happen.  I’ll be sure to give plenty of notice.

That’s a lot so let me go get busy!  I’m grateful for each of you and would love your feedback on some of the plans in the works.  This is all for you, so feel free to let me know what you think!

Also, if you haven’t taken advantage of the free cleanse starting Monday, you may want to.  Almost 100 have signed up, so I know there are probably more of you out there.  Don’t miss this!  I’m not sure when I will run it again.  Sign up here and be a blessing to someone by sharing the link.

A Parasite Cleanse Saved My Life

9pineappleI have dealt with iron deficiency anemia for years.  Once my iron was so low (hemoglobin of 6, when 12 or higher was the goal) that I was supposed to go for a transfusion.  But instead my holistic diva mama jumped in and nursed me back to health with some high iron liver and onion doses daily for 3 weeks.  Yuck.  But it worked.  However, I stopped eating beef, especially liver, and my iron level started to creep back down.  I have traveled extensively to several countries, have eaten more than my fair share of sushi, and have had pets living in and out of the house.  All of these put me at risk for parasites.  I have never had one doctor even mention this as a possible reason for my chronic iron deficiency, and a host of other embarrassing symptoms that will only be discussed with my cleanse and detox clients.  But after discussing some of these symptoms with a nutrition and wellness colleague, it occurred to both of u that perhaps parasites could be causing me so many problems.

So I did it – I got mad as hell at the thought of something living off of me and giving me nothing but grief in return.  So I removed sweets except for a couple of fruits from my diet, all meat, and starch, and drank the nastiest concoction of herbal teas on the face of the earth – for 2 weeks.  And that’s when it all happened for me.  You may recall a while back when I lost a bunch of weight as a result of going gluten free, but I still had the kangaroo pouch and anemia.  Well that disappeared with the two week cleanse I did with an emphasis on getting rid of the freeloading parasitic bastards.

I will be discussing some of the symptoms nobody wants to talk about in a google hangout this weekend with some detoxing diva friends who have signed up for the chat.  Then we will do a free 14 day parasite cleanse together.  If you’d like to join us, sign up here.  I’m not charging a thing this time for the info I will share with you although I know the value of it, so it certainly won’t hurt to join us.10cayenne

Have you ever done or thought about doing a parasite cleanse?  Do you know the symptoms?  If so, share below.  And I’ll see you at the hangout.

Celebrating Women’s History Month with Minister Ginger London

I recently had the honor of speaking with Minister Ginger London of Ginger London Ministries.  What a great time I had chatting with her in celebration of Women’s History Month.  We mainly discussed being a woman entrepreneur, and the importance of taking care of the temple.  This was an awesome sister chat that I was truly blessed to have had the chance to be a part of.  I think maybe I value female connections so much because I grew up as the only girl, with two brothers who would lock their door when they heard me coming. LOL!  Anyway, the audio is here for your to enjoy, and share.

Overweight? You Might Have Food Allergies

As I shared a few days ago, I used to struggle with my weight.  But what I didn’t tell you is the weight was the least of my troubles.

A couple of years ago I started having chest pains, mainly upon awakening in the morning.  This was accompanied by nausea.  This went on pretty consistently for about a month.  I thought there was something wrong with my heart.

The pains became more frequent.  So I finally decided to see a doctor for an EKG. Continue reading “Overweight? You Might Have Food Allergies” »

Juicing and Smoothies Part 2 – Drink Your Greens 21 Day Habit

IMG_3559

I added (to taste) cardamom, ginger, honey, cinnamon, allspice to what you see there – a cup of soymilk, a cup of spinach, and a cup of roasted butternut squash. You can add water and ice cubes if it’s too thick. Use almond milk or hemp milk instead if you like.

As we begin the second quarter of the year I think back to January, and how hyped we were about our new blenders, green smoothies, and lofty goals. Just checking in… are you on schedule or have you fallen by the wayside?

IMG_3561

This was made using my Ninja blender and was one of my favorite smoothies, using leftover roasted squash!

The 21 day habit this month will be Drink Your Greens. Now remember, the plan here is not to drink green smoothies for 3 weeks in place of all meals, but rather to add them to our diet as a way to make sure we are increasing our fruit and veggie intake. And here’s why…

1. Detox – You do not want to piss your liver off, so give it some love by drinking some cruciferous veggies. These include kale, broccoli, cabbage, bok choy, cauliflower just to name a few. These blood cleansers assist the liver in the process of detoxifying our blood, protecting us from some cancers. I love that the name cruciferous means cross bearing, as these veggies have crucefers, cross shaped flower petals.  Who knew?

2. Fiber – As I mentioned on the facebook page, Americans spend $600 million annually on laxatives. When you juice, you throw away that lovely bowel moving fiber.  So if you are able to take in the additional fiber, then by all means, do!

3. Meal replacement – or should I just say portable, drinkable meal. That is one of my faaaavorite features of healthy green smoothies.  Add a scoop of peanut butter, some chia seeds, or flaxseed meal for an even more complete meal.

4. Nutrients – You could eat a salad for lunch, but when you drink your veggies you multiply the nutrients you take in, as you are able to drink far more leafy greens than you can eat.

5. Weight loss – The increase in fiber from drinking green smoothies leads to feeling fuller longer and less spikes in blood sugar levels, which can help with losing weight.  Yay!

6. Beverage variety – I’m a huge water pusher. I don’t even see the point of drinking sweet sugary beverages, unless of course it’s a martini or margarita, then by all means have one. Or two. But if you want to switch up from drinking just water, add some fruit, or make your own smoothie or juice.

7. Beauty – Toxins removed from the blood and bowels can only lead to healthier skin, hair and nails.  We all love that, don’t we?

So how have you been doing since the January smoothie habit?  As for me, I’m holding steady, still loving my green smoothies. I stopped for a couple of weeks due to plain old dontwannagetupthisearly-itis. But I’m back. And I came back to get those of you who got left behind.

For those who have kept steady on the course, congrats. Will you do all of the readers here a huge favor by sharing with us your tips for keeping the passion for reaching your goals?  Drink Your Greens, 21 Days to a New Habit starts April 9.  The Q&A session is April 8 in the Soul Food Therapy Google + Hangout.  See you there?
