Celebrating Women’s History Month with Minister Ginger London

I recently had the honor of speaking with Minister Ginger London of Ginger London Ministries.  What a great time I had chatting with her in celebration of Women’s History Month.  We mainly discussed being a woman entrepreneur, and the importance of taking care of the temple.  This was an awesome sister chat that I was truly blessed to have had the chance to be a part of.  I think maybe I value female connections so much because I grew up as the only girl, with two brothers who would lock their door when they heard me coming. LOL!  Anyway, the audio is here for your to enjoy, and share.

Overweight? You Might Have Food Allergies

As I shared a few days ago, I used to struggle with my weight.  But what I didn’t tell you is the weight was the least of my troubles.

A couple of years ago I started having chest pains, mainly upon awakening in the morning.  This was accompanied by nausea.  This went on pretty consistently for about a month.  I thought there was something wrong with my heart.

The pains became more frequent.  So I finally decided to see a doctor for an EKG. Continue reading “Overweight? You Might Have Food Allergies” »

Black Girls Juicing for Health – Our 3 Day Cleanse

Willette, Nicole, Kareen, Kelly, Carla, La’Tila

A couple of months ago I did a post on my green smoothie party.  It was really nice to get some sistas together for a healthy cause.  This month, which at Soul Food Therapy is Juicy June, we were inspired by Kareen of I am Eating Right to do a 3 day juice fast/cleanse/detox.  When this was mentioned on the facebook page, the response was amazing.  Many of you have requested to join in, and I am so thankful to have you along for the health ride!  Kareen shared how she was inspired to do a 60 day juice fast/feast (and lost 40 pounds) after watching the movie Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, which you can watch at the end of this post.  Below, I’m sharing a list of a few juicing sistas I’ve found on the net who we will use as resources to guide us along in this fast.  All this stuff about us being the most obese, least healthy – I’m choosing not to focus on that.  Instead, I’m enjoying seeing my sistas make healthy choices AND educate others on doing the same.  Take a look at the links below and let me know what you think.  Have you used any of their services?

Our Juicy June 3 day juice cleanse starts Thursday June 13.  If you would like to join us simply make your request to join in the comments below and the details will be emailed to you.  We will utilize the services of the following:

1. Kareen of I am Eating Right – creator of The Juicy Life series of 15 videos on juicing 101 – watch the series so you’ll be well prepared.  Here is video #1.

2. Willette of WillHealthy – detox and cleansing coach extraordinaire – Willette will prepare and ship your juices if you’d rather not make them yourself.  Join me and Willette on Tuesday evening (June 11) at 6:30pm PST, 8:30 central, 9:30 EST for a brief pre-cleanse Q&A session about detoxing and cleansing.  You must join the Soul Food Therapy circle in Google + first.  Second, download the Google Hangout app.  And third,  check your email for a link to get into the hangout a few minutes ahead of time.  If you must join by phone rather than video, visit the facebook page and leave a private message with your phone number at least an hour before the session.

3. Nicole of The Sweeter the Juice – fabulous FREE ebook of juice recipes – download her ebook to use during the fast.  Choose which juices you would like to drink, making sure to include the recipes containing leafy greens.

4.   Carla of Raw Raw Life – raw food blogger with an extensive supply of raw, vegan, juice and smoothie recipes, videos and ebooks – Visit Carla for her grocery list as a guideline to make sure you are well stocked and ready to go.  Also, Carla has juicing ebooks as well – more recipes for you to choose from.

We will not use the following services but I certainly wanted to let you know about these juicing sistas in case they are in your area.

5. La’Tlia of Juicy’s Flavor – juice bar and products sold in multiple Virginia locations

6. Kelly of Juice Hugger – 1/2 of a duo with a cafe in Brooklyn and a huge selection of products online

Do you have a link to add?  If so, please leave that info in the comments section.  Now let’s get busy juicing!

A Day in the Kitchen with the Nutritionist for NBC’s Biggest Loser

Can you think of someone you admire from a distance and would love to get a chance to meet and be mentored by them, if even for a few moments?  You know, like Oprah, Michelle Obama, Iyanla Vanzant.  Or someone who’s considered a “star” in your specific profession.  The person I’m thinking of is Cheryl Forberg, and I got the chance to meet her, learn from her, eat her cooking,  all in her fabulous kitchen in the Napa Valley.

What a lovely day it was indeed, one I’ll never forget. I had the opportunity to visit the Napa Valley for a 3 day culinary workshop given by the Food and Culinary Professionals of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. You may have seen my constant Facebook posts and tweets of all the delishiousness that took place from the time we arrived and were greeted by the freshest ahi tuna, to the time we sipped the last taste of Riesling. Fortunately it was all geared towards the healthy palate of a bunch of dietitians, or else we could all have easily put on 5 pounds. IMG_3718 We learned, we cooked, we tasted, we sipped, we dined out, we shopped, and we networked.  But for me, the highlight of the trip was time spent in the home of one of my short list of people I’d like to wear the shoes of for a day. With 15 cookbooks, a fabulous home on 9 acres, a dream career of chef and dietitian for a major network show, I might even want to wear this chef’s clogs for more than a day.

Such a gracious host, Cheryl patiently shook hands with each guest as we arrived receiving line style.  Of course I had to get a hug.  Call me a fan if you want to, I don’t care.  I was so excited, she was lucky I didn’t pick her up. LOL!  Perhaps a hug was enough to make some of that 15-cookbook-writing-spirit rub off on me.

So I know my people.  Some of you may be wondering “why is she all hugged up with this white woman?”  First of all, that’s not nice.  But second, if you know of an African American female chef AND dietitian with 15 cookbooks and a show, and a ridiculous kitchen with 3 ovens and a home on 9 acres, please hook me up with her so I can be all hugged up with her too.  Just like music and all the arts, something about food just blurs color lines, doesn’t it?  Thank God for that.

Anyway, I knew nothing about Cheryl personally before the visit.  But I left feeling that she has a truly genuine spirt, just warm and sincere.  I mean who else invites 20 strangers into their home?  Cheryl clearly wanted us to be comfortable, making sure that we left with some knowledge, AND a signed copy of her latest cookbook.

Honey lemme tell you, when I say this chick’s kitchen is the bomb, I mean

the kitchen is

the bomb… dot com.

And her food was delicious too.

I was among the privileged 20 dietitians who got a chance to attend the debuting of Cheryl’s new 500 square foot kitchen AND take an exclusive cooking demo and social media session led by her. Click on the video at the end of this post to hear about how I almost missed out on this awesome opportunity.

Yes, Cheryl was a real sweetheart. I sure hope she’ll think of me should she ever need someone to collaborate with on a healthy soul food cookbook (or just to come out, sip wine and sit on those red barstools with her while we gaze into the sunset).  In the meantime, I’ll enjoy my parting gift, a signed copy of her newly released book, Cooking with Quinoa for Dummies.  This experience wasn’t on my bucket list, but I think ‘ll go ahead and add it…  and then check it off.

The Biggest Loser airs tonight on NBC.  I’ll be watching as usual.  Will you?
